Scene shot for but deleted from all five incarnations of PARDON US. Stan and Ollie are unwitting agents in a plot hatched by the principal heavy, Walter Long. They're shown here presenting a gift to the state governor and the prison warden. Long's character, "The Tiger," has persuaded the boys to give these officials what he's told the fellow convicts are cigarettes. In fact the package contains a bomb. An explosion followed, but not enough laughter ensued from preview audiences. So the next casualty turned out to be the bomb sequence; the Roach brain trust edited it out. This still depicts the scene as shot for German-speaking territories, where the film played in movie theaters as HINTER SCHLOSS UND RIEGEL. Hardy is shown handing the package to Lucien Prival, who specialized in playing less than likable Germans in Hollywood pictures, notably in some of the Thelma Todd short comedies for Hal Roach, as well as HELL'S ANGELS (1930) for Howard Hughes and THE GREAT DICTATOR (1940) for Charlie Chaplin.
