In the English language version of PARDON US, the one most widely known, Wilfred Lucas portrayed the prison warden. "And still they come..." was his famous lament upon seeing poor Stan and Ollie. The temper-prone warden's part was steadily reduced following each preview, so that the character was more sympathetic in the surviving domestic release, but consequently less so in the now recovered Spanish export edition. Lucas entered films in 1907, working with D.W. Griffith. One of the august actor's last roles was as another authority figure, the Dean in A CHUMP AT OXFORD (1940).
