Stan Blystone is less obscured in the equivalent and equally grim looking still photo posed only seconds apart for use in the German language market. The same cast was retained and has barely moved for this shot, with but one exception: the recast chief detective who is grilling Hardy. Again, the different native speaker assumed Fred Kelsey’s part in order to best carry the German dialogue; he has not as yet been identified. And whereas the French adaptation of THE LAUREL-HARDY MURDER CASE is not known to survive today, the German re-filming, DER SPUK UM MITTERNACHT, has recently surfaced, having been recovered from an archive in Moscow. Translated, the title means “the ghost at midnight.” This spooky set on Stage 1 of the Hal Roach Studios stood there, ready to be used over and over throughout the years, until bulldozers finally plowed the place under in the 1960s. It can be glimpsed again a couple years later in the comedy short entitled SEALSKINS starring Thelma Todd and Zasu Pitts, and once more in a 1958 episode of the Roach TV series OH! SUSANNA with Gale Storm and the same Zasu Pitts.
